The Wawasee Community School Corporation is due to appoint a member to the Milford Public Library Board of Trustees in 2026. Residents of the Milford Public Library service area who are interested in serving may submit a letter of intent to Library Director, Karl Stutzman, by Wednesday, September 2 (see information below).

About the Board:

The Milford Public Library Board of Trustees is composed of seven appointed members. Two are appointed by the Kosciusko County Commissioners, two are appointed by the Kosciusko County Council, and three are appointed by the Wawasee Community School Corporation.

Board members serve for four-year terms, which may be renewed no more than four times. Board members meet monthly to conduct the library’s business. They also may need to participate in committee meetings and learning opportunities.

Board Membership Requirements:

Prospective board members must reside in the library’s service district (Town of Milford, Van Buren Township, and eastern portion of Jefferson Township in Kosciusko County). The appointee must have been a resident of the district for at least the two years immediately preceding their appointment to the board. Board members are not permitted to serve as library employees.

Members of the Board of Trustees serve as volunteers and govern according to the library’s established bylaws as a municipal corporation under Indiana law. Board members vote to establish library policies and approve the library’s expenditures. Board members also oversee the work of the Library Director.

Board Member Competencies:

·         Regular attendance at monthly meetings of the board (held on the third Monday at 5pm unless announced otherwise).

·         Participating in board committees and learning opportunities.

·         Listening and speaking in meetings, offering opinions and asking questions.

·         Representing the interests of the entire Milford area community in its needs for library services and the values of the taxpayers.

·         Providing accountability for the library to operate according to established values, ethics, best practices, and laws.

·         Envisioning the role the library can play in community growth and education.

Submitting a Letter of Intent:

On letterhead indicating your full name, residential address, and phone/email contact, address a formal letter to the Wawasee Community School Corporation Board care of Milford Public Library. State your length of time residing in Milford Public Library’s service area, your reason for wishing to serve on the library board, and your relevant qualifications for service.

By Wednesday, September 2, 2026, please submit your letter via email to Library Director Karl Stutzman, director@milford.lib.in.us or via mail at PO Box 269, Milford, IN 46542. Karl will collect all letters received, verify that they meet the requirements, and forward them to the Wawasee school board for consideration at a regular public meeting.
